The narrative of Perry's famous visits to Okinawa and Japan, in 1853 and 1854, at the initial behest of President Fillmore. Using gunboat diplomacy, Perry eventually negotiated treaties with Moriyama Einosuke, representing the Tokugawa Shogunate. (Incidentally, Moriyama Einosuke had been taught English by Ranald MacDonald (b. 1824), who had grown up at Fort Astoria and, later, Fort Vancouver.). A handsome, presentable copy.
