A census and study of the bookplates of Washington state collectors and institutions in a handsome limited edition. A professor of Anthropology, Starr was an eminent bookplate collector and commissioner who had recently moved to Seattle from Chicago.

Among the bookish Seattle luminaries featured is Edmund Meany, whose "Three Knives" bookplate appears, at first glance, as prosaic, at best. However, its derivation is from the appellation bestowed on him by Chief Joseph, in recognition a young, gallant Sioux warrior with whom Joseph had been acquainted before the warrior's death. and of whom Meany reminded Joseph. Not in SMITH.
