A vital work documenting the Opium Wars. Hall commanded the East India Company's steamer, which was especially outfitted to carry heavy armaments. Its success resulted in the Treaty of Nanking, the first of the "Unequal Treaties," reprinted here in the appendix, which gave Hong Kong to the British, among other indignities that remain a source of Chinese national umbrage. See HILL: VI, p. 23. A handsome copy.
