The "Autograph Edition" limited to 1500 copies, with the new preface in Vol. I signed by Ruskin. Ruskin's landmark survey of Venice's Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance periods as reflected in architecture, providing by extension a general history of the city. The chapter in the second volume, "The Nature of Gothic," has been oft-reprinted, and remains a fixture in architectural studies.
