Item #7571 Noor Ebrahim tells of Douts, the best curry house in the area, which was frequented by gangsters, what it was like to own a 1964 Hillman Husky, how he and his wife Galema were married in Harvey Street Mosque, and other slices of life that provide a glimpse into a neighborhood utterly demolished.
A fascinating memoir of the Cape Town neighborhood before apartheid. In 1966 District Six was declared a whites-only area; by 1982 the neighborhood was leveled. Prior to its demise the area featured a rich tapestry of language, religion, and economic class, composed of freed slaves, small business owners, artists and crafts-people, laborers and professionals - in short, a living example of strength through diversity.
