Captain Gilbert sailed the "Charlotte" to transport convicts to Botany Bay. Thereafter he traveled to Canton to secure a cargo of tea on behalf of the East India Company -- an account of that leg of the voyage comprises this volume. It was an important voyage in the exploration of the Pacific and, importantly, the discovery of chains of islands therein. See HILL I, p. 124.
