Observations and Remarks Made During a Voyage to the Islands of Teneriffe, Amsterdam, Maria's Islands near Van Diemen's Land ...; Bibliotheca Australiana No. 68.

Amsterdam: Nico Israel, (1975). Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. 4to. Pp. [ii], viii, [viii] (List of Subscribers), 72. With two folding charts and one plate. Simulated vellum. Fine / Fine. Item #703

Title continues: " ... Otaheite, Sandwich Islands; Owyhee, the Fox Islands on the Northwest Coast of America, Tinian, and from thence to Canton, in the Brig Mercury, commanded by John Henry Cox." A handsome facsimile of the first edition, now prohibitively expensive.

Lada-Mocarski writes that this voyage was a product of the 1788 war between Sweden and Russia; that the "Mercury" was indeed copper-bottomed, which is cited by Mortimer, but that she also carried sixteen guns, conveniently omitted by Mortimer. Secondary to the narrative concerning the Northwest Coast and Russian activity there, the information gleaned by Mortimer concerning Bligh and the Bounty is exceedingly valuable, as the appearance of this title in most Bounty-related histories attest. With fascinating glimpses of Oteheite and the Sandwich Islands. See Lada-Mocarski 48; Howes M845.
