The Seattle physician sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii and the Far East, including China and Japan, before dropping down to the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka ("Ceylon"), then the Near East, before transiting through European capitals and, finally, returning to San Francisco. There, "assuredly, will come again the urge to drop everything and follow the route of the gangplanks." His insights into 1930s Chinese culture, in both Shanghai and Peking, are worthy. The colorful dust jacket, with impressionistic art evoking Childe Hassam, coupled with art deco lettering, is quite cheery.
