To say that surgeon Guillou served under Wilkes on the United States Exploring Expedition is a slight understatement. As surgeon, Guillou tended to crew members who had been subject to Wilkes' frequent and severe floggings. The Wilkes-Guillou relationship became so fraught that Guillou was placed under arrest during the tour. Following the Expedition's return, Guillou filed seven charges against Wilkes, revealing Wilkes' deep failings as leader of the USEE.

A handsome BCC book production, consistent with the their 1960s tendency toward large-format volumes, presented here in fresh copy.
