Collins got his professional start illustrating the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He then began contributing to Helix, Seattle's underground newspaper, including covers, and comic strips featuring characters Cecil C. Addle and Dipstick. Later his daily comic strip appeared in the Op Ed pages of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer under the title The Adventures of Cecil C. Addle and Dipstick. The connection between Collins' lighthearted humor and Guy Anderson's ineffable Northwest mysticism connotes the breadth of the region's artistic temperaments.
