Joaquin Miller His California Diary Beginning in 1855 and Ending in 1857

Seattle: Frank McCaffrey at His Dogwood Press, 1936. Limited Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. Pp. 106. Edited with an introduction by John S. Richards. Frontispiece portrait, four pages of facsimiles. Tan cloth with blind-stamped pictorial design to front cover and black spine-lettering. One of 700 copies, this copy is unnumbered. Fine. Item #6868

A daily record of Miller's first visit to California, including drafts of letters to friends and several poems, made possible when the manuscript was given to Ina Coolbrith by Miller's sister-in-law in 1912, a year prior to the poet's death. This is the first printed appearance of that diary.

Very much a Frank McCaffrey production. McCaffrey's book design is usually marked by either a lingering, perhaps outdated, element of Victoriana, using colored paper and floral effect to a nostalgic fault, or an enthusiastic, and often accomplished, embrace of streamline sans-serif design. This volume is a combination of both.
