Campbell's remarkable story recounts a journey to China and Japan and the coast of Alaska. He spent considerable time in the Sandwich Islands, becoming a confidant of King Kamehameha I, and was the king's sailmaker. His activity on the Northwest Coast, however, was less fruitful. He spent a year on Kodiak Island, where he met Baranov, and was shipwrecked on the Island of Sannack (known today as Halibut Island, near present-day Juneau). He suffered frostbite and both of his feet had to be amputated by a Russian surgeon, whose account comprises one of the appendices. See Lada-Mocarski, 71; Hill I, p. 45.
