The Master of the House

New York: Jonathan Cape and Robert Ballou, (1932). First American Edition. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. 8vo. Pp. [iii], ix-xi, [1], 397. Full green cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. Top edge dyed black. Slight edge-wear commensurate with age. In the dust jacket, printed red and black, that shows age-toning, edge-wear, some old cello tape repairs on verso, and chip the size of a US 50-cent piece at the lower corner of the front flap - could be a crude price-clip. Withal, a presentable copy. Very Good / Very Good. Item #6855

First American Edition. A handsome copy of Hall's first work following The Well of Loneliness. That novel's open treatment of lesbianism ran afoul of British censorship and was banned in England. This novel, concerning a modern Christ figure, won neither the approbation nor the notoriety of The Well of Loneliness, but nonetheless established Hall as a well-regarded novelist. Scarce dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
