Original Linocut Block Featuring a Northwest Nature Scene with Squirrel
[Seattle]: [Harold Keeler], [1940s]. Harold Keeler. Original printing block. Unsigned 12 x 12 inch linoleum cut mounted to 1/8-inch thick Masonite panel, depicting squirrels amongst vegetation. Handwritten note attached: "Harold Keeler squirrel print / Given to Chris & Jules by Mare Blocker." The linoleum has shrunk and is only partially detached from its backing panel. Good+. Item #6836 Seattle native and book artist Mare Blocker founded MKimberly Press in 1984, while "Chris & Jules" refers to Christopher Stern and Jules Remedios Faye, who combined their respective fine presses, Grey Spider Press (Stern) and Street of Crocodiles Letterpress Printery (Faye) to create Stern & Faye Printers, the lauded fine press near Sedro Woolley, Washington.
Best known as a lithographer, Keeler was born in Denver in 1905 and moved to Seattle in 1942 to work as an artist and printmaker at Boeing. Collections of his work are held at the Library of Congress, University of Washington Special Collections, and the Seattle and Denver Art Museums.
