The intriguing reference to this history of Phoebe Goodell Judson may have been gleaned from personal interaction with the pioneer or from her rich memoir, A Pioneer's Search for an Ideal Home, published the year before this set. Judson first settled on the Cowlitz River, south of Puget Sound. Finding the gravelly terrain unsuitable for farming, she and her family filed a subsequent claim on the Nooksack River, in what is now Lynden, Washington. She was thoughtful and progressive, as is evidenced by her humane attitude toward Indians and her support for women's rights. In addition to these noble qualities, Judson's narrative is commendable from a literary standpoint alone. Judson is cited throughout this history, including recollections of her by fellow pioneers.

Increasingly uncommon. SMITH 8819.
