The Southwest Historical Series was published beginning in 1931 and concluded with this volume in 1943. According to Clark and Brunet, it was the first major series to be published upon the publisher's move to Glendale. Beiber's work on the first eight volumes was slow, requiring his contract to be canceled; Hafen was enlisted to complete the subsequent four volumes, culminating with this index.
