Burton was an English actor and theatre manager who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1834. In 1837 he established Burton's Gentleman's Magazine inspired by the eponymous English review and had a stormy relationship with his editor Edgar Allan Poe. The selections in this volume, many by Burton, conform to that magazine's features: fiction and essays often with sporting subjects such as hunting, and poetry by Charles West Thomson.
