The first edition, published in Tacoma by the author, preceding the 1911 and subsequent editions published in partnership with Putnam's. The title references the Native American reverence for Mt. Rainier, or Takhoma (Tacoma), as they know it, is filled with fascinating mythic lore. But past tense? As the mountain continues to consume climbers and other adventurers who tempt its fate, and with missions to recover bodies regularly abandoned, perhaps the deification of the mountain is not so irrational.
