Nelson was former Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court (1850-53) who had returned to his law practice in New York. Anson Dart (1797-1879) of Wisconsin had been appointed first Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Oregon Territory in 1850 to negotiate treaties between the US government and tribes. The resulting agreements were not ratified by Congress and Dart resigned his appointment in 1852. This letter itemizes cash expenses incurred in several unspecified lawsuits in Oregon before Justice Nelson including travel from and to Milwaukee. A copy of the Court Record had been enclosed, to be returned to the Indian Office by Nelson.
