Seattle: Helix, 1967. Walt Crowley. First Printing. Single loose sheet. Color offset print on heavy stock measuring 23 x 17.5 inches. Edges lightly age toned, and with light creases, now mellowed. Very Good. Item #6475

Cover offprint two-color poster from a 1967 issue of the Seattle underground bi-weekly, the work of Walt Crowley depicting the horror of the Vietnam conflict, featuring, among others, the masters of war. Although dated 1966, the artwork ran as a centerfold in Helix Vol. I No. 4. May 16, 1967. The poster was printed in three variants: blue (seen here), brown and a shade of orange-sepia.

Helix joined a burgeoning underground press then including groundbreaking alternative papers the East Village Other, the Los Angeles Free Press, the Fifth Estate and the Berkeley Barb. Founded by Paul Sawyer, Paul Dorpat and Lorenzo Milam, it sprang from their intellectual fervor at the Free University, an alternative thinktank they also founded. Eventually star-illustrator Walt Crowley assumed editorship.

This print is housed in a removable, clear sleeve with acid-free backing.
