Garrett served as a sergeant in the Field Artillery of the Occupation in Trieste, where this novel is set. It's the second novel from the poet, who was then an Assistant Professor at Wesleyan, where he began his teaching career. Jacket artist Milton Glaser ran the influential Push Pin Studios in New York with Seymour Chwast and others. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
