Piracy A Romantic Chronicle of These Days
New York: Grosset & Dunlap / George H. Doran Company, (1923). Helen Dryden (dust jacket illustration). Hardcover with Dust Jacket. 8vo. Pp. [12], 13-327. Bound in blue cloth with red lettering stamped on front board and spine. Spine just a touch faded, else quite bright. Bookseller tag on rear pastedown (Radston's, Berkeley) In the illustrated dust jacket that shows edge wear, darkened spine and a two-inch closed tear between the rear panel and rear flap fold. Laid in is a contemporary Grosset and Dunlap bookmark listing available titles, not including the present work. Near Fine / Very Good-. Item #6383 Whereas the Doran dust jacket featured a C. Morse pictorial illustration depicting a couple dressed for a night out, the woman vaguely flapper-esque, this highly stylized Helen Dryden illustration ranks as arch arc-deco: top-hatted gentlemen with narrow eyes astride a flapper with huge, beguiling peepers; withal, an exotic and ghostly tableau that suggests a mid-to-late 1920s publication date. Dryden also illustrated the dust jacket to Arlen's Lily Christine (Doubleday, 1928). Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
While the Doran copyright date is stated 1923, the book was re-issued by Grosset & Dunlap with the mere addition of a fresh dust jacket, new artwork and the subtitle "The Three Loves of Ivor." In sum, a first edition in a remainder dust jacket.
