Centennial Address with Historical Sketches of Cromwell, Portland, Chatham, Middle Haddam, Middletown and its Parishes

Middletown Connecticut: William B. Casey, 1853. W. R. Butler. First Edition. Hardcover. 12mo. Pp. iv, 295, [1] errata. Frontis. engraved view of Middletown in 1825. With two plates, one showing the first meeting room, the other Wesleyan University. Black cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, decorations and borders blind stamped on the covers and spine. Bookplate of Stephen F. Chadwick. Corners bumped, head of spine worn, light scuffs to cover, leaves foxed and edges age toned. Good +. Item #6341

Prepared in celebration of the 1850 second centennial of the settlement of Middletown. Includes a short address by Mayor and publisher William B. Casey, and historical notes prepared by Dr. Field and others. Former owner Stephen Fowler Chadwick served as the fifth governor of Oregon State; born in Middletown, 1825, he died in Salem, Oregon in 1895. While the printing of the bookplate does not conform with 19th century technology, it was likely added posthumously, perhaps by his son, Stephen J. Chadwick, who served on the Washington State Supreme Court.
