The dust jacket illustration by E. McKnight Kauffer is a fine example of his later style. From the contemporary review in the New York Times: "John Cousins' novel is the story of the search for a man named Papadopoulos — the name an RAF crew gave to the unknown Greek guerrilla to whom they dropped supplies during the Nazi occupation of Crete. To three of the crew he becomes a symbol that draws them back to post-war Crete and involves them in the Cretan version of the Greek civil war."
