Berlin was associated with the St. Ives Group of artists, including Herbert Read, Ben Nicholson, Bernard Leach, et al. This is his pensive search for Gypsy life, following in the 19th c. shoes of George Borrow, only to find their age-old ways of life have come to dreary ends: "the exceptional, the eccentric, or the nomadic" traits have been extinguished by modernity.
