Menu for Celestial Gardens Chinese Restaurant in Toronto, Ontario "Designed for Your Enjoyment"

Toronto: Celestial Gardens, [1949]. First Thus. One Sheet, Folded. One sheet measuring 16 x 24.5 inches (folded to four panels, each 8 x 12.25 inches). Printed on thick textured stock, designed to mimic a leather grain, with lavish illustration on front panel. Condition is quite fresh, with corners sharp and colors vibrant. Fine. Item #6237

Offering typical southern Chinese fare, Americanized (soups, noodles, chow mein, chop suey, complete Chinese dinners, seafoods, fried rice, egg foo yong) in the heart of Toronto's old Chinatown at 92 Elizabeth Street. Although undated, we posit 1949 as the publication date based on online references to historic restaurant pricing. A subsequent edition of a Celestial Gardens menu, with higher prices, is held by Vancouver Island University; that's the only reference to the restaurant we've been able to divine.

The cover illustration is a peculiar blend of styles, incorporating English lettering with Asian flourishes, along with Chinese characters, and an illustration that looks decidedly similar to the style of Boris Artzybasheff. Menu is now housed in a clear archival sleeve with acid free backing.
