The author set out to sell the novelty of soda water to the Karachi coast, floated by his investor, Viroschand Ganeshkind. When the ship on which Warburton travels sinks, the commercial enterprise is a total loss, Warburton is cast adrift in the Gulf of Oman in an open boat, and Ganeshkind is out a fortune, for he held a mortgage on the vessel. After Warburton is rescued, he and Ganeshkind attempt to recoup losses through a variety of schemes, including trafficking opium. A contemporary New York Times review stated "the whole exciting narrative is told in a delightful style." Dust jacket is now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
