British-born, American-and-French-educated, Herford made his living in New York through submissions to magazines, including Century Magazine, Harper's Weekly, The Masses and Punch, among others, as well as a brace of books. The "American Oscar Wilde," per some accounts, Herford's wit made him popular with NYC social clubs. His dust jacket illustration captures the humor of madcap 1920s life, warranted worthy enough to be reproduced in HELLER and CHWAST, Jackets Required, p. 61. Dust jacket now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
