Brother and Sister - WITH Scarce Dust Jacket

New York: Jonathan Cape Harrison Smith, (1930). Calman (dust jacket illustration). First American Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. 8vo. Pp. 264. Teal endpapers. Top edge dyed black. Fore-edge untrimmed. Bound in black cloth with green vines stamped on front board and spine, the latter with green lettering. Slight spine lean; a scuff to front board; wear to lower edges. In the price-clipped color-illustrated jacket that shows rubbing, edge-wear, an old cello-tape repair running vertically on verso, and a large chip at base of spine. Good+ / Good. Item #6100

First American edition, published the same year as the first British. The German writer fled Germany twice: the first time during WWI, the second time with the rise of the Nazi Party, who burned his books as decadent. If not decadent, Frank had a penchant for the senstational, as this novel of incest suggests.

The uncommon Calman-designed dust jacket presents an art-deco motif of an alarmed sister and a stern brother, almost as harlequins. While the dust jacket has condition issues, listed above, it's rare in any condition. The dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
