Top edge foxed and with dust soiling; endpapers a touch age-toned, but with text block otherwise quite bright. In the illustrated dust jacket, two-color, with art-deco styling on a martial theme. An early novel documenting the surge of Nazism, Olden's work follows the plight of a young Jew amid "the lives of ordinary decent people swept before the tidal wave of political events." This edition published the year Olden was denaturalized by the Nazi Party, after he had spent two-years of self-exile in Prague. The uncredited dust jacket art suggests that grim plight, images of fire and weaponry posited behind lettering for "blood and tears." Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
