Bound in black cloth with the illustration of a fist holding a dagger stamped in red on front board and spine, the latter with red lettering. Top edge foxed and with dust soiling; endpapers a touch age-toned, but with text block otherwise quite bright. In the illustrated dust jacket, two-color, with art-deco styling on a martial theme. The spine is darkened and the rear panel is quite grubby. The $2.00 price is intact on the front flap. Very Good / Good+. Item #6097

An early novel documenting the surge of Nazism, Olden's work follows the plight of a young Jew amid "the lives of ordinary decent people swept before the tidal wave of political events." This edition published the year Olden was denaturalized by the Nazi Party, after he had spent two-years of self-exile in Prague. The uncredited dust jacket art suggests that grim plight, images of fire and weaponry posited behind lettering for "blood and tears." Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
