Tare Harvest

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, (1936). First American Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. 8vo. Pp. 332. Bound in orange cloth with title block stamped on front board and spine. A hint of fading to top edge of cloth, else a bright, fresh copy in the pictorial dust jacket that's notably well preserved. Near Fine / Fine. Item #6066

First American edition of a novel set in Chile and concerning a foreigner who by guile amasses land and cattle. Written under a nom-de-plum by a young English woman raised in Buenos Aires, the novel, reviewed by the New York Times, creates "a really solid sense of pioneer life in an English family in the Andes."

The uncredited dust jacket illustration is a delight, presenting a gaucho with a woman tending her garden amid a bucolic Andean landscape. The scarcity of the novel is unaccountable; no copies online, and scant reference to the title in reference works and on the internet. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
