The passion of an English adolescent girl for a teacher in a French finishing school, a classic of lesbian fiction. Written in the 1930s based on author Dorothy Strachey's experiences in the 1880s at Marie Souvestre's school. Dedicated to "the beloved memory of V. W. [Virginia Woolf]."

Painter and textile designer Duncan Grant was a member of the Bloomsbury group and lover of Dorothy's brother Lytton Strachey. An image of the dust jacket is featured in Martin Salisbury's The Illustrated Dust Jacket (p. 98), where it's noted that "Grant's design was perhaps influenced by his own experiences of Paris in 1906. "Dust jacket preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
