New York: Minton, Balch and Company, (1933). First American Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. 8vo. Pp. 364. Bound in bright red cloth with gilt lettering and rules stamped on front board and spine. In the illustrated dust jacket, edges worn and rubbed, light chipping at head and tail of spine, spine faded and with an old one-inch tape repair on verso. The dust jacket served its role well, preserving a cloth binding that remains notably bright. Fine / Good+. Item #5969 Perhaps the worst of the Great Depression was factory owners miniaturizing workers and then forcing them to run on the teeth of gears. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
First American edition of Beswick's first novel. The superb art-deco dust jacket presents proles as threatened by the gnashing teeth of industrialization. Dust jacket illustrator uncredited. However, it mimics (or vice versa) the dust jacket for Frank Tilsley's The Plebeian's Progress, which also depicts diminished workers negotiating gear teeth.
