A fine example of Lustig's later period: a sentence from John Ruskin's The Stones of Venice arrayed in a variety of 19th century types. Herbert Bayer, Design Director for the CCA, commissioned great artists and designers to illustrate written ideas for an avant-garde ad campaign that lasted from 1950-1956. Besides dissemination in print media, posters were published in various portfolios over the span of the campaign. This poster is reproduced on p. 99 in Born Modern The Life and Design of Alvin Lustig by Heller and Cohen-Lustig (Chronicle, 2010). The authors cite the poster as reflecting Lustig's increased interest in antique wood types, later employed in his designs for Meridian book covers. Preserved in a clear archival sleeve with acid-free backing.
