A classic crime mystery and courtroom drama adapted by Frances Noyes Hart (1890-1943) from the Hall-Mills double murder case, the most sensational newspaper drama of the era until eclipsed by the Lindbergh kidnapping. (Trial attendees included Damon Runyon, Mary Roberts Rinehart, H. L. Mencken, and Billy Sunday.) Hart's mystery helped create the courtroom genre, and resides on the Haycraft Queen Cornerstone checklist. The basis for the 1929 movie directed by Monta Bell.

Published by arrangement with Doubleday, Doran & Co., utilizing the same dust jacket illustration - a sinister figure in top hat with walking stick reading a banner newspaper headline. HUBIN, p. 195. Dust jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
