First edition in the dust jacket with the exquisite, but uncredited, illustration. With the ownership signature of Karl Stern, the neurologist and psychiatrist who fled Nazi Germany in 1936, established himself as a neurologist in London before migrating to Montreal where he fulfilled a successful career at the Montreal Neurological Institute. His conversion from Judaism to Catholicism is documented in his successful memoir, Pillar of Fire (Harcourt, 1951).

Zoologist and neurophysiologist Young's lectures were commissioned by the BBC and augmented with comments for this publication. He considers brain processes related to communication, especially as applied to scientific activity. Jacket preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
