First edition of the author's second novel, a story of a Chinese immigrant who lives in San Francisco's Chinatown in the early 1900s and experiences the 1906 earthquake. LaPiere taught sociology at Stanford; through a Rockefeller grant, he studied San Francisco's Chinatown, with which he developed an affectionate understanding.
