In the 1930s Paul was a friend and correspondent of Steinbeck, to whom he dedicated this book. The theme of the novel concerns the peregrinations of a musical prodigy, which is superbly reflected in the Kauffer-esque dust jacket illustration depicting ta box car pushing away from a piano's keyboard. Dust jacket now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
