Reprint of the 1886 first edition. Bancroft engaged (but did not credit) Petrof to research and translate Russian documentation of its eastward expansion from the 16th century, and his writing constitutes the first half of this volume. Bates wrote the last third. Gruening was first U.S. Senator from Alaska and ex-governor of the Territory. Annotation reads in part "Deep Creek Look-out near village of Ninilchik, July 1961."
