Item #5525 The gift inscription, to a Seldovia school teacher, is from H. L. Faulkner, sheriff, U.S. Marshall and attorney. In 1909, while serving as a U.S. Marshall based in Juneau, Faulkner arrested Robert Stroud for his first murder. After subsequent murders, Stroud gained fame, or infamy, as the Birdman of Alcatraz. Faulkner went on to earn a law degree and fulfilled a successful career representing Alaska mining concerns.
Verses expressing sentiments excluded from his official reports on assignments in Northern Alaska with the Department of Labor (1897-98) and the Twelfth Census (1899-1900). Each composition is followed with a date and location.
