A volume in the author's Wayfarer series, following Wayfarer in North Africa (1931).

A fine entry in the superb genre of British travel writing between WWI and WWII. After the horror of WWI, many English writers questioned why they should live in a damp, dark environment: Robert Graves fled to Mallorca, Peter Fleming (Ian's brother, and the then-literary star of the family) went to China, Robert Byron travelled to the Middle East, D. H. Lawrence went to Sardinia, Cyril Connolly hung out with bohemians in southern France, Evelyn Waugh spent time in Brazil and Africa, and many others went in other directions. A genre unto its own. The monograph on the subject by Paul Fussell titled Abroad serves as an excellent guide.
