Sinclair's indictment of the higher education system in the US; he lambastes the placement of titans of industry, especially robber barons, as university trustees. Regarding the University of Washington, Sinclair takes aim at Colonel Blethen, publisher of the Seattle Times, "an exceptional old scoundrel" who donated chimes that used to ring from a bell tower on the north end of the campus. With reference to the Centralia Massacre in which Wobbly Wesley Everest was murdered. Also includes a chapter of invective directed at "Professor" Billy Sunday.
