Levertov began publishing her poetry while working as a London nurse during WWII. Her first poem was published in 1940 (Poetry Quarterly), which inspired Rexroth and his circle to pursue (in his words) ''excited correspondence about her." This is the poet's first volume of verse, presented in an exemplary copy.
