First edition, inscribed "To Annie Riley Hale, co-worker, thinker, but above all Mother - a noble woman who I'm proud to call Friend. Philip M. Lovell." A popular figure in 1920s Los Angeles, Lovell is best known today for commissioning Richard Neutra to design the landmark Lovell Health House in 1927. An author of several books, his popularity was bolstered by his weekly "Care of the Body" column in the Los Angeles Times.

Recipient Annie Riley Hale was the author of These Cults, an analysis of the foibles of Dr. Morris Fishbein's Medical Follies, and an indictment of quack medical practice in general, itself a popular work also published in the 1920s. Now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
