First published in the Chicago Reader, 1983, Bogira's essay explores the lives of a handful of recipients living on monthly $144 General Assistance checks at a time when squalid apartments were renting for $175 per month, or $185 for an apartment featuring a hot plate. At the time, the Illinois General Assembly had reduced monthly checks from $190.

The power of Boriga's essay rests in allowing his interviewees to express their views, thus presenting a heartrending humanity to shine through, albeit one subject to the fickleness of government. Book is now protected with a removable, clear archival sleeve.
