An indefatigable researcher, Marshall had intended to publish his opus, Acquisition of Oregon and the Long Suppressed Evidence about Marcus Whitman in 1904, the year this book was published. However, he delayed publication to confirm some aspects of his research; in the meantime, he published the work at hand as a sort of prospectus, announcing his thesis that would alter the historical record. Reference to this work can be found in the Tweney 89 citation for Acquisition, item 48.
