AIR MAIL ACROSS THE PACIFIC San Francisco to Hong Kong -- Original Poster

San Francisco: (Pan American Airways), 1937. First Thus. Poster housed in clear archival sleeve. Printed in black on heavy card stock measuring 12.75" x 19". Text in Chinese and English. The image presents a Martin M-130 lumbering over the Embarcadero (Coit Tower in the background), which is a curious vantage considering the Golden Gate Bridge opened in May that year. Slight age-toning and wear to corners, edge-wear and old creases, now mellowed. With two closed tears, one on the bottom edge measuring .75", the other on the left edge measuring 1.5 inches. Withal, a handsome artifact that shows well. Near Fine. Item #5045

BOSTON-VBF In 1931 Pan Am commenced "clipper ship" service, in South America, with Sikorsky S-38 flying boats. Service expaned to other world regions, with planes in those areas referred to as American Clipper, Southern Clipper, and Caribbean Clipper. The China Clipper made an inaugural flight in 1935, landing at Canton (Guangzhou), and ports enroute were established for purposes of port-of-call, fueling and mechanical service. Printed in September, 1937 (500 copies), the poster was directed at San Francisco's Chinese-American population, and advertised in Mandarin seven-day mail service to Hong Kong, 70 cents per half ounce. Honolulu, Guam, Manila and Macao are listed as stop-overs enroute. Poster is now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve with archival mat backing.
