Three lunar roving vehicles were built for Apollo missions 15-17. Once Boeing won the contract to manufacture the LRV, in 1971 the company built four vehicles at the Environmental Test Laboratories in Kent, Washington. In a sophisticated facsimile of lunar environment, the facility reproduced the rigors of spaceflight and complex lunar physicality. Boeing then put the Rovers through the rigors of “shake and bake” tests.

On the three Apollo missions the Rovers revolutionized lunar exploration by enhancing the distance astronauts could travel to perform scientific experiments and collect lunar samples. David Scott and James Irwin traveled 17 miles in their "moon buggy," far more than the previous astronauts who were limited to short walks around their landing sites.

For car buffs, the LRV’s cost about $10 million each. As such, the most expensive four-wheel automobiles built in the history of manufacturing.
