Perhaps best known for his book on privateers, (History of the American Privateers, and Letters-of-Marque, During our War with England in the Years 1812, '13 and '14), George Coggeshall (1784-1861) was the son of a shipmaster whose first venture to sea, 1799, was as a cabin boy under his uncle, Captain Henry Turner, on a voyage to Cadiz. He served as captain of two privateers in the War of 1812. After the war Coggeshall served as captain of merchant vessels, for which he had a generous career. The book at hand covers the entirety of his career.

Coggeshall appears to have followed his observation expressed herein: "As a general principle, if shipmasters are not intelligent and well-informed men on most subjects, it is their own fault for not improving their precious privileges. In the first place, what can exalt and elevate the human mind more than the boundless ocean, and where can be found a scene better adapted to deep thought and silent contemplation?" SABIN 14195..
