Born of Jewish parents in what is now Poland, studied in Paris and Florence, was drafted into the German army in 1914. While on the Lithuanian front he was deeply impressed with the religious commitment of the Jewish community and its ability to endure intense physical hardship. This led him to make their living embodiment of Holy Scripture the subject of his art. Dust jacket preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
